Li Po Cocktail Lounge is a classic San Francisco dive bar tucked into the heart of Chinatown that feels like stepping back in time. Its reputation largely rests on strong, affordable cocktails—especially the Mai Tai, which draws both locals and visitors curious about its cult status. The bar’s modest, no-frills setup is centered on the long counter with limited seating, making it a spot for grabbing one or two drinks rather than lingering over lengthy evenings.

The atmosphere leans into its retro vibe with dim lighting and a slightly worn-in feel that contributes to its unpretentious charm. You’ll find an eclectic mix of patrons here, including an international crowd not necessarily in their twenties, giving the place a welcoming, social energy without the typical nightclub buzz. For those who appreciate bars with character rather than polish, this spot offers a distinctly San Francisco dive experience.

Service can feel a bit uneven at times, and the layout means groups of three or more might find it tough to have a relaxed conversation. However, the bartenders are knowledgeable about the cocktail lineup, which includes inventive staples like the Electric Lemonade and traditional dives into Long Island Iced Teas and Chinese-themed Mai Tais. Beer drinkers also have good value options, with familiar brands such as Tiger Beer and Grolsch available at reasonable prices.

This lounge works best for a quick stop or a casual meetup rather than a long night out. Evenings tend to be the liveliest time, especially later on weekdays and weekends when regulars and curious travelers alike gather. While it’s not a place for everyone, those interested in local dive culture or looking to share a quirky, memorable experience with friends will find something compelling here.

Located on Grant Avenue, just steps into Chinatown’s bustle, Li Po fits into the neighborhood as a longtime watering hole preserving a piece of San Francisco’s nightlife that contrasts with the glitzier spots nearby. It’s a choice stop for those who enjoy a well-crafted drink alongside spirited conversation in a setting that feels genuinely lived-in and far from polished.

Great little dive bar with unbeatable prices. Highly recommend stop in for a quick drink. Heard the mai tai were also good, beer is $6 tho. Great service- bar tender Can’t pass up!

Okay, so this is a Chinese dive bar at its fullest, super fun unique experience, but also the service is a little weak. They sequestered us to a corner and were oddly strict about it. I would 100% go back just because of its uniqueness and to show friends something unique but alone I don’t know if I would come back

Crazy night here. Met some friendly people. I recommend the beer deals. I didn't love my purple rain cocktail but honestly I had such a good time at this bar. It's a great, social environment. International crowd, not too young (I'm 40).

Sometimes you get very lucky while traveling. My sons and I decided to get a drink, randomly at Li Po. We sat next to a man that frequents Li Po when he is in town. He made us aware of Anthony Bourdain featuring it on his show. I could tell right away why he was taken by this bar. You get a retro vibe right away. The kind of bar that makes you feel comfortable. And MISS CONNIE!! Her quick wit, style, and no-nonsense bar management made me her biggest fan. She will hit you with a sense of humor that is honestly missing in so many modern bars. Of course the Chinese Mai Tai is amazing. Go for the drinks, stay for the experience!

A charming hole in the wall with delicious Mai Tais. The drinks were really good, but (at least for us) it was the kind of place to just grab one drink or two for the novelty and then move on to where you wanted to actually spend time. The bar only seating made it difficult for three people to have a conversation, but we all agreed it that we were glad we went.

Li Po Cocktail Lounge is exactly what you would expect from a dive bar in Chinatown, and that is part of its charm. The interior is a little worn but it works perfectly for a casual, laid back drink with friends. The Chinese Mai Tai is the signature drink here and definitely worth ordering. It is popular for a reason, with a smooth and tasty flavor, though for me personally it was not too strong as some other reviews mentioned. Service was quick and the atmosphere was easygoing. It is a fun stop if you are in the area and want something low key.
